Position Description
HMS MEDscience's mission is to provide all students irrespective of background, race or zip code access to high quality, innovative programming to address the achievement and opportunity gap in STEM education. The MEDscience model combines realistic simulated medical emergencies, built around an interactive lifelike mannequin, with hands-on training in a range of STEM disciplines (clinical skills, laboratory and forensic sciences, and biomedical engineering). MEDscience engages over 3,600 students annually (primarily high school) through schoolyear and summer programming and is one of the largest out-of-school collaborators with the Boston Public Schools. MEDscience students learn to think critically, problem solve, and work collaboratively, while gaining exposure to a wide range of career paths in healthcare and the life sciences.

HMS MEDscience seeks an experienced and skilled program leader with clinical experience to serve as an Assistant Director for its flagship anatomy and physiology program. This position will play a leadership role within the teaching team for MEDscience’s largest program, with a focus on leading teacher training and professional development. This position will have day-to-day responsibility for training new teachers in MEDscience’s unique pedagogy, which requires an intensive 6-month training period and ongoing professional development and learning. The position will also be responsible for managing partnerships with schools and nonprofits, with a particular focus on leading partnerships with schools that have a clinical career pathway focus.

As MEDscience continues to grow (and after an initial onboarding period), this position will take on additional leadership responsibilities, including managing 2-3 direct reports.

Key Responsibilities:
Lead Teacher
  • Plays leadership role on teaching team responsible for delivering the organization’s flagship MEDscience anatomy and physiology curriculum.
  • Delivers interactive lectures, simulation cases, and debriefs, utilizing MEDscience innovative & unique program pedagogy aligned w/program goals of critical thinking, problem solving, building teamwork, communication skills, developing personal health literacy & continued interest in the STEM fields/careers.
  • Develops and implements scope and sequence for semester-long partnerships with schools, based on shared priorities. Develops and delivers individual lesson plans, tailored to the priorities of schools and experience-level of students.
  • Leads and mentors less-experienced teachers.

Teacher Training & Professional Development
  • Directly responsible for developing and implementing training for new teachers, professional development for existing teachers, and implementing a rigorous framework for ongoing feedback and continuous improvement.
  • Provides strategic guidance on training and professional development strategy to MEDscience executive leadership and aligns training program with overall organizational goals.
  • Applies clinical experience to ensure alignment between MEDscience curriculum and current best practices in patient care. Develops and delivers professional development trainings based on best practices.
  • Builds organizational capacity through “train the trainer” method, by training other lead teachers on how to train new teachers in the MEDscience pedagogy.

Partnership Management
  • Manages school and nonprofit partnerships, serving as primary point of contact for partner high schools at the administrative and department level, with a particular focus on schools that have clinical career pathway programs.
  • Develops teaching and learning goals with partners and builds and implements curriculum tailored to the specific priorities of partners and their pathway programs.
  • Builds strong relationships with school administrators and nonprofit leaders. Manages program evaluation and improvement for partner schools.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, including experience in a clinical setting preferred.
  • Advanced degree is a plus, but not required.
  • Experience developing and implementing training and professional development programs in an academic or medical setting.
  • Prior K-12 STEM teaching experience is a plus.
  • Creative, nimble, and proactive, with exceptional ability to anticipate and solve problems.
  • Must possess excellent judgment and understanding of when to elevate issues to executive leadership.
  • High level of maturity and empathy with proven ability to build strong relationships and develop trusts with colleagues and a diverse network of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex initiatives and partnerships.
  • Able to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and effectively prioritize time and tasks while adapting to changing needs and priorities.
  • Prior management experience is a plus, ideally in a medical or academic setting.
Additional Information
This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
