Job Description

We seek a collaborative colleague, one who contributes to a positive team environment. This new position, with a faculty rank of Clinical Assistant Professor (with opportunities for advancement), is jointly funded by ISU’s Bengal Bridge program (where the position will reside) and a newly funded NIH grant-funded program in ISU’s Department of Biological Sciences. Bengal Bridge is a transitional academic program designed to increase college access and opportunity for recently graduated high school seniors. Bengal Bridge creates an academically strong environment rooted in general education courses combined with supplemental instruction, tutoring, faculty mentoring, and advising. The goal of the NIH-funded program, ISU Bridges to Research Careers (BRC), is to build a diverse biomedical workforce by helping first-generation college students successfully navigate paths to biomedical careers. BRC participants take a microbiology lab-based research skills course as freshmen and are then placed in research labs around campus. Students for the BRC program are recruited from the ISU Bengal Bridge student population.

Key Responsibilities

Instructs ACAD 1104 First Year Transition and general education Biological Sciences courses as part of the 7-week summer Bengal Bridge program
Instructs Biological Sciences and Academic Skills courses during the Fall and Spring semesters; these may include general education BioSci courses, ACAD courses, or courses in the applicant’s area of expertise, such as the new microbiology lab-based research skills course that is part of the BRC program.
Provides mentoring, student development, and key academic information to Bengal Bridge students and BRC participants in order to enhance student learning, retention, persistence and graduation.
Participates in registration and retention events and efforts specifically for Bengal Bridge, and in support of university admissions and registration initiatives.
Assists the Bengal Bridge program with recruitment efforts in regional high schools during the academic school year to identify and enroll first generation and limited income students for the summer program.
Works within an innovative, creative, and energetic environment to develop diverse programs and processes in order to support our students’ educational goals.
Supports the work of the Math (tutoring) Center, Writing Center, or Content Area Tutoring.
Collaborates closely with Idaho State University colleges and departments on student welfare, academic success, and retention.
Collaborates closely with STEM and Health Professions faculty members throughout campus in order to identify research opportunities for BRC participants
Completes committee work, special projects, and assignments as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Biology, Microbiology, or other relevant life science discipline (individuals nearing completion will be considered)
Experience instructing in a college or high school setting
Experience mentoring and/or advising high school or college students
Preferred Qualifications

Experience mentoring and working with students and families considered to be at-risk
Experience mentoring and working with students who are the first in their families to attend college
Experience working with students in a Course-based Research Experience (CRE) setting
