POSITION SUMMARY:

The science laboratory associate will act within a team of coordinators and student workers led by the laboratory associate whose collective purpose is to aid faculty in maximizing student success by meeting the laboratory preparation needs of the Science and Mathematics Division classes.

This position’s core responsibility is to prepare, set up, and maintain lab activities for assigned biology courses held at main campus and at satellite sites accurately and precisely. Providing continuous coverage of lab classes requires coordination with many people, equitable distribution of workloads between a team of laboratory coordinators, and supervision of student workers.

Successful attainment of this goal will necessitate tracking of lab activities by course and instructor, maintenance of biology stockroom inventory, maintenance and repair of lab equipment, management of lab areas, and supervision of laboratory coordinators and student workers. The above responsibilities must be accomplished while meeting all safety regulations relating to chemicals and biohazard materials. This will include keeping accurate records of chemicals, supplies, equipment, and related lab stock items, as well as following proper waste disposal guidelines for existing and newly developed laboratory activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

Preparation and set-up of Lab Activities:
Lab preparation and set-up activities will be assigned based on the following:
Lab associate and lab coordinators will collaborate to identify an equitable distribution of courses based on their disciplinary expertise and/or experience.
Lab associate and lab coordinators will determine which courses and/or faculty they will prepare laboratory activities for, so they are divided equitably based on the level of preparation required.
Collaborate with coordinators to develop a schedule for delivery of materials/equipment for laboratory activities to the Delta College Midland Center, and Delta College Saginaw Center.
Lab Materials Sheet (LMS) Management:
Provide Lab Materials Sheet (LMS) to faculty so they can create a lab schedule that includes all potential preparatory activities and materials needed for the lab associate and/or coordinator to prepare and set up the lab activities for the assigned course.
Collaborate with laboratory coordinators to organize LMS for each course/faculty regarding lab preparation activities and develop a digital storage system for all LMS.
Collaborate with faculty and lab coordinators to troubleshoot problem areas involving materials or equipment.
When reviewing LMS provided by faculty, ensure that all lab activities adhere to Environmental and Safety Regulations.
Collaborates with laboratory coordinators to monitor and requisition consumables for biology courses including, but not limited to microbiology laboratory supplies, preserved and fresh dissection materials, gloves, and chemicals. Fresh dissection materials require advance order placement, arranging for college vehicle, and pick up.
In collaboration with laboratory coordinators, conduct inventories of all biology models and equipment to identify those which need to be repaired or replaced.
Creates requisition lists for purchasing models/equipment for the purchasing department for bids for all biology laboratory activities.
Responsible for seeking bids/estimates for and subsequently purchasing all goods and services to maintain the laboratory stockroom supplies for course preparation. This includes all associated record keeping.
Enters IMET forms and subsequent requisition forms for Science and Mathematics Division.
Reports any items (models & equipment) removed from inventory to Facilities Management.
Hires, schedules, supervises, student workers for Physics, Chemistry, Geology, and Biology.
In coordination with other lab coordinators, monitors maintenance and repair of equipment (ex: DI water tanks, gas tanks, autoclaves, freezers, and ice making machines).
Collaborates with Science and Mathematics Associate Dean to monitor supplies and services budget expenditures in all science departments.
Responsible for creating a schedule for greenhouse maintenance (plants and physical environment) and the plants in Founder’s Hall (may be designated work assignment for student workers and/or laboratory coordinators).
Manages biology laboratory stockroom which includes safety compliance as required by safety and environmental regulations relative to storage, handling, and disposal of all materials used or produced in the laboratory including chemical and biohazardous materials.
In collaboration with laboratory coordinators, maintains SDS sheets and stockroom’s safety manual.
Other duties:
Collaborate with laboratory coordinators to maintain data on anatomy & physiology student room use.


These duties require working with the Associate Dean for purchasing approval through a variety of vendors, supplies, Delta General Services, Facilities Management, and Business Services for material acquisitions and maintaining laboratory supplies and services as allotted by the Science and Mathematics Division budget.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent knowledge and skills. Major(s) required: Biology, Biology Education, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Cell/Molecular Biology.
1-3 years of experience minimum
Additional Experiences Considered
5-7 years of full-time documented experience of teaching, laboratory coordinator, and/or management.
