Job Summary
The Department of Surgery at University of Utah Health’s School of Medicine is looking for a creative, motivated, and responsive Social Media Specialist to create engaging, thoughtful, and balanced content representing the best of the academic department and to support the growth of the clinical efforts.
This individual will be a key player on the Department of Surgery Marketing and Communications Team. You will collaborate with all members of the Department of Surgery and engage with Marketing and Communications teams from University of Utah Health, Huntsman Cancer Institute and Intermountain Children’s Hospital to enhance relevant content across all channels. With support from the associate director, you will plan, create, edit, and post high-quality content designed to engage a broad social media audience and grow our followers at a timely cadence. A successful Social Media Specialist should have strong content creation skills, including copywriting, basic graphic design, video editing, and captioning to craft engaging posts across platforms. Expertise in platform-specific features, analytics, and paid advertising is essential for optimizing strategies and measuring performance. Effective community management and communication skills are critical for engaging with audiences and maintaining a positive brand image. Additionally, project management, creativity, and adaptability are key to managing multiple campaigns, keeping up with trends, and driving innovation in social media efforts.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications in the Department of Surgery, the Social Media Specialist will play a pivotal role in designing the social media presence of the Department. This position supports a variety of channels, video projects, and content – ensuring engagement and increased followers by multiple stakeholders and social media users.
Essential Functions
· Prepare and manage monthly social media calendar for Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, LinkedIn
· Produce and curate social media content to engage users, increase impressions, and grow channel networks
· Optimize content delivery strategies, build content topics, tailor content to various platforms, target specific audiences, and make editorial decisions
· Manage social listening and identify content topics, social trends, and conversations to help increase visibility of the department
· Compile and share third-party content (U of U Health, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Intermountain Children’s Hospital), host social live events, respond to direct messages
· Build partnerships to grow social networks
· Respond to reputation risks by taking appropriate action and recommend solutions to minimize harm
· Compile data, analyze, and report on social media insights. Analyze content performance and create monthly performance indicator reports with recommendations.
· Create or modify images and graphics for social media purposes
· Script, film, and edit video content for social platforms
· Strategize to build and grow digital community through social media channels
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree English, Journalism, Communications, or related field plus 3 years of related experience, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills; familiarity with a variety of computer software; project management and strong interpersonal skills; ability to work both individually and in a team setting.

Some areas may require additional experience with specific computer systems and may require skills in interviewing, ad copy writing, editing, photography, web writing, graphic design, audio & video production, and oral presentation.

Master’s degree in a related field may be preferred.
