Job Description

Job Summary/Basic Function:
The purpose of this position is to ensure the operational readiness and support the academic Nursing Skills Practice Center, prepare practice equipment for student use, assist faculty with lab curriculum development, order chemicals and nursing supplies, maintain inventory, deliver safety training, ensure proper chemical and equipment storage, maintain and operate scientific equipment and instrumentation, and data management of all academic center needs. This is not a faculty position.

Level Scope:
Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees. Typically hold a Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Essential Functions:
85% of the time the Nursing Skills Practice Center Assistant must:

This position is responsible for academic skills center logistics, data management, safety, and support in order to ensure operational readiness for academic Nursing Skills Practice Centers.

Weekly supply and inventory preparation for all nursing practice center courses.
Act as onsite support of all academic nursing skills troubleshooting.
Ensure academic skills center readiness at the beginning of each semester in regards to cleanliness, preparation of supplies and chemicals, and verify all equipment are operational.
Coordinate Practice Center supplies and equipment for nursing skills classes.
Coordinate with all skills instructors on schedules and procedures for each academic skills course each semester.
Work with Simulation and Nursing Practice Center leaders to implement changes and improvements to educational skills curriculum.
Maintain detailed procedures for each Simulation or Practice Center preparation.
Manage nursing inventory levels and order all supplies for the academic Nursing Skills Practice Center.
Act as department safety officer for all academic space and report Practice Center incidents.
Identify and dispose of hazardous chemicals and waste in accordance with University, Federal, and State requirements.
Coordinate with University Environmental Health and Safety for hazardous waste disposal as needed.
Fill in for Skills Practice Center Operations Specialist when absent.
Set up and tear down of Nursing Practice Skills Center curriculum and assignments.
Opens and closes lab, often starting work before 0730 and working past 1700 on a rotational schedule.
Performs routine maintenance and custodial duties.
Ensures software is up and running, conducts simple IT upgrades.
Assists instructors and students with Nursing Skills Practice Center equipment, procedures, and software as needed.
Assists students in use of software.
10% of the time the Nursing Skills Practice Center Assistant must:

Additional committee work and special projects as assigned by the Simulation Center Operations Coordinator and Skills Practice Center Operations Specialist including the cross training to simulation support.
5% of the time the Nursing Skills Practice Center Assistant must:

Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Think critically – ability to use medical / healthcare knowledge to solve complex problems relating to common nursing guidelines and practice.
Comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, equipment, common practices, and supplies.
Knowledge of medical and nursing equipment, troubleshooting techniques, computer setup and maintenance. Skills Practice Center scenario set-up and storage, chemical inventory management, and inventory reporting requirements.
Ability to build trust and maximize relationships – must seamlessly interact with several internal (faculty, staff, and adjust professors) and multiple external groups.
Manage performance- must be able to delegate and assess work performance and self-regulate.
Communicate effectively – must be able to discuss complex nursing and scientific topics with several audiences (subordinate researchers, students, University organizations, and vendors).
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years experience or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

Baccalaureate Degree or completed program (details below) as a licensed healthcare professional.
Health Science background with certification and/or license as a:
Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, Certified Veterinary Technician, Certified Surgical Technologist, or other trained health care specialist.
