Job Description
Requirements
As a top academic health and science center in the United States, Georgetown University Medical Center seeks to provide, in a synergistic fashion, excellence in education — training physicians, nurses and other health care professionals, as well as biomedical scientists — and cutting-edge interdisciplinary research collaboration, enhancing our basic science and translational biomedical research capacity in order to improve human health. Emphasizing service, we are dedicated to the Catholic, Jesuit principle of cura personalis — “care of the whole person.” Our partnerships with organizations in the region strengthen our work and expand its reach.
The Laboratory of Biomolecular Homeostasis and Resilience at the Georgetown University Medical Center led by Dr Priyanka Joshi (PI) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lab Manager/Staff Scientist. The lab’s overarching goal is to uncover biophysical mechanisms by which metabolites maintain protein homeostasis in the context of normal cellular function, aging and disease across multiple scales. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing our research efforts through the application of protein biochemistry, biochemical and biophysical techniques, high-resolution microscopy, mass spectrometry-based proteomics and metabolomics and development of workflows using automated platforms. This position requires excellent organizational and communication skills. This is a 1-2 year role with possible extension. This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys leading operations and management of impactful research projects. Duties include but are not limited to:
Manage laboratory operations including procurement of supplies/equipment, maintenance of lab inventory, resources, cell culture room, media preparation, keeping track of ordering, contract creation, and follow through.
Participate in experimental planning, performing independent research and data analyses and contributing to manuscripts.
Interact with internal and external collaborators and vendors, ensuring lab is up-to-date with health and safety protocols.
Maintain lab’s web server.
Work Interactions
The Lab Manager/Staff Scientist will contribute to the mission and vision of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology by performing research on the biochemical basis of neurodegenerative diseases to impact innovative therapies. The lab manager will directly report to the PI and interact with the lab members on a regular basis. They will participate in all group meetings and manage the day-to-day activities of the lab. The mentorship and support you will get from the PI includes:
Supervision on a research project aligning with the main interests of the lab
Weekly one-to-one meetings to discuss progress and set short-term goals
Mentoring towards an academic, industrial, or entrepreneurial career
Development of a Individual Progress Plan for where you want to go when you leave the lab
Access to networking opportunities
Trainings/Workshop participation aligning with project and lab requirements
Scientific communication - manuscript writing, publishing, giving effective presentations
Requirements and Qualifications
A Master’s degree in Biotechnology or associated fields in biological sciences; Bachelor’s degree with 1-2 years wet lab experience will be considered
Working in the wet lab is a requirement
Basic computational skills
Programming experience will be a nice to have
