Job Description
Summary
The Eye Bank Technician I is an integral position to the Lions Eye Bank. The position works to procure tissue from the locale hospitals, morgues and funeral homes. The tissue is used in transplant surgery and/or research. The position evaluates corneal tissues and donor information to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
The work schedule is Sunday, Thursday, Friday from 6:00am - 6:00pm and Saturdays from 10:00am - 2:00pm.
Job Duties
- Recovers eye tissue from tissue donors for transplant or research purposes.
- Performs and documents donor physical and ocular assessment.
- Obtains blood specimens for serologic testing.
- Performs internal processing of tissue on an as needed bases.
- Requests and obtains medical records of donors.
- Reviews potential donor medical and social history to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
- Delivers eye tissue to surgeons for transplant or research.
- Answers and screens referral calls for eye donors.
- Contacts families of qualified potential donors and obtains consent to donate eye tissue.
- Enters referral data into database.
- Maintains clean and safe laboratory environment.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a tissue bank, funeral home, or working with next of kin.
- College degree either AA, BS or BA.
- COA, COT or COMT through JCAHPO
- 2 years working as an ophthalmic assistant or ophthalmic technician within an ophthalmology practice.
