Job Description
Position Summary:
The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Dean are to oversee and coordinate the School's: (a) non-transfer student Orientation and Advising programs, including HSS Orientation and the HSS 099 class, and serving as a faculty resource on advising issues; (b) Peer Mentor Leadership Development program; (c) course scheduling and registration, including review of, and acting on, applications for independent courses and course overloads; (d) curricular issues, including proposals for new courses, course modifications, and program approvals; (e) Departments' academic bulletins and transfer equivalencies, including those from our Study Abroad Centers; (f) student support services, serving as a School of HSS liaison with other academic schools and offices at TCNJ, and (g) in support of the HSS Advising Coordinator, the School’s student recruitment efforts. In addition, the Assistant Dean will work closely with the Dean to research, identify, and pursue enhancements and opportunities for the School of HSS and its students, faculty, and staff.
Main Responsibilities:
Coordinate and lead class scheduling and student registration for the School, managing the FAR in conjunction with the Dean’s Assistant, including significant interaction and coordination with other assistant deans, academic schools, department chairs, faculty, Program Assistants, and many College offices.
Coordinate and lead all School-based student support services and programs (e.g., complaints, applications for independent courses and overloads, liaising with the Dean of Students, ARC, EOF, etc. as needed).
Serve as the Dean’s representative on the Curriculum Committee and review materials submitted for the Curriculum Committee's review.
Act as liaison with other schools and College offices (e.g., Records and Registration, Admissions, Center for Global Engagement, Career Center, and Center for Student Success); Serve as the contact person for, and manage, inquiries and concerns of current students, parents, and faculty.
Coordinate the non-transfer student HSS 099 curriculum and programming, including incorporation of the Peer Mentors; occasionally teach in-load and HSS 099 section(s), as needed.
Supervise the Peer Mentor Student Leadership Program; coordinate and teach, in load, the HSS 100 course for the Peer Mentors.
Work with the Advising Coordinator and Dean to facilitate academic events and meetings (e.g., Accepted Students Day, Orientation Days, Transfer Student Receptions, Student Advisory Board meetings, etc.).
Research and facilitate the implementation of "best practices" in various aspects of higher education (e.g., pedagogical strategies, outreach, grant procurement, DEIA) in collaboration with the Dean; oversee department reviews (undergraduate bulletin, CGE reviews, Community College course reviews).
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
A master's degree from an accredited college or university.
At least 5 years of professional experience related to the scope of the position, including significant experience working directly with undergraduate students and college/university faculty; demonstrated ability to multi-task, organize work independently, and problem-solve successfully.
Ability to articulate the importance of the humanities and social science fields in the higher education of students to diverse audiences (e.g., prospective students, enrolled students, parents, employers, the media, government officials and agencies, the public).
Ability to organize and prioritize assigned work, analyze problems, develop appropriate work methods, and multitask. Strong ability to analytically reason for making academic decisions that are in the best interest of the students, the School, and the College.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, discretion, and grace in handling and managing sensitive student and faculty issues.
Excellent oral and written communications skills. Excellent analytical abilities. Ability to prepare clear, technically sound, accurate and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Ability to prepare correspondence.
Excellent interpersonal skills and a good sense of humor, with the ability to work with a broad range of individuals, groups, and personality types.
