JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Under the oversight of the Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration, the Director of Financial Operations ensures proper financial planning, management, and oversight of the college's Business operations including but not limited to Graduate Dental Education, Pre-Doctoral Operations, Billing Operations, Memphis based Dentistry Clinics and Dentistry Programs, and Rural Dentistry Clinics. This position oversees activities related to budget preparation and control, human resources administration, accounts payable, accounts receivable, contract and grant accounting, business resources, direct patient billing, and other business-related issues.
Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements; analyzes financial data to assess performance and identify actionable insights.
Develops key performance indicators (KPIs) to track financial metrics and progress against targets.
Prepares and presents financial reports and insights to support major financial decisions, with collaboration and approval by the Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration.
Directs the development of strategies to optimize revenue generation and minimize revenue loss.
Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders (Department Chairs, Deans, Directors, and researchers) to align financial reporting with organizational and research objectives.
Directs the position and budget control for the College of Dentistry with authority to reject or approve current and new positions.
Directs the management of vendor relationships and negotiates contracts to secure favorable terms using bulk purchasing and educational discounts.
Collaborates with the Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration to align revenue cycle management with organizational goals, optimize purchasing practices, address financial governance issues and ensure alignment with university policies.
Establishes and maintains internal controls to ensure financial integrity and compliance; conducts risk assessments to identify and mitigate financial risks.
Directs billing contracts and financial reporting for all Graduate Medical Education in Dentistry programs.
Monitors budget performance regularly, analyzing variances and opportunities for optimization.
Directs the hiring, terminating, and other Human Resource functions related to Graduate Dental Education Residents within both Hospitals and the College of Dentistry.
Approves payable invoices, payroll, and other procurement activities.
Directs grant accounting and sponsored projects within the College of Dentistry.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Six (6) years of relevant experience; OR Master’s Degree in Business Administration and four (4) years of relevant experience. (Master’s Degree in Business Administration is preferred.)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of Financial and Human Resource operations for a College of Dentistry or other similar public institution.
Ability to work independently, to have initiative, creativity, and flexibility.
Ability to interact and direct other employees in order to achieve the overall mission of the College.
Broad and in depth understanding of a financial/business office specifically for a College of Dentistry or similar college.
Excellent time management skills.
