TED 501-04 - Learning, Development and Culture
MW 4:30-8:20pm Meets on 5/28, 5/30, 6/2, 6/4, 6/9, 6/11, 6/16, 6/18, 6/23, 6/25
This course examines how children and adolescents learn and develop cognitively, socially, psychologically, and morally as individuals and as members of the diverse range of families, cultures, and communities in California. We look at ways teachers can create positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom learning communities. The development of the learner is examined from multiple theoretical perspectives, and candidates practice applying these theories to understanding what happens in the classroom. We examine the impact of race and socio-economic status on classroom equity, student self-esteem, and empowerment/ disempowerment. We also investigate critical thinking, creativity, and reflection, while beginning to learn how to create developmentally, linguistically, and culturally appropriate learning activities and assessments.
Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Education or related field
  • 5 years of experience teaching in K-12 settings
  • Knowledge of the major theories in child development
  • Knowledge of the major theories of learning
  • Knowledge of atypical development associated with various disabilities
  • Knowledge of how K-12 children differ in their development and learning approaches to support the development and learning of individual children

Candidates must perform all course-related work within the state of California.
The salary range for this position is $6,480-$10,308 dependent on qualifications. The salary range for this position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
